While shampooing cleanses your hair of dirt & oil accumulations, it can also cause color fading. Professional shampoos & maintenance products help tremendously, but can only do so much if you are cleansing on the daily. Milk your shampoo time, and use dry shampoo if you feel a bit oily or flat. When in doubt, top knot it out.

This is the part where we professionally recommend cold showers. Unlike permanent hair colors, fashion colors simply stain the outer layer of your hair. Using cold water while shampooing will help the color remain on your hair, & not spiraling down the drain. The same concept applies to heat styling. Take a time out on hot tools some days. When you do use heat, always apply a heat protectant & turn down the temp!

Only call 911 for color coming out of your veins. Especially for the first few washes, you can expect to leave a colorful trail on light colored pillowcases, shirts, hats, towels, etc. Dark colors are your friends. Colorful water when shampooing is also totally normal.

As much as your new hair makes you feel like a mermaid, the sun and chlorinated water can pull all that unicorn magic out of your hair. Tanning, boating, and surfing can also take your color out faster. If you need to fulfill your mermaid vibes by swimming, wet your hair and spray a leave-in conditioner liberally and towel dry. This is going to help, but won't guarantee color longevity
